Tennant Creek IGA

Our story

IRAM took over the management of the Tennant Creek IGA in 2015 and has been building range and capital city pricing, including weekly catalogues and specials for Tennant Creek and the Barkly Region.

IRAM has a management agreement with the Julalikari/IBA partnership to operate the Tennant Creek Food Barn as part of the Independent Grocers’ Association (IGA), which is part of the Metcash group.

A partnership Board, chaired by IBA director Jana King, reports to the two shareholders. Other members of the Board are Anthony Miles (Chair of Julalikari), Richard James and Trish Angus (independent director nominated by IBA).

The fire in July 2020 destroyed the Tennant Creek IGA site and the store was temporarily relocated to the BP storage shed.

The new store was built from the foundation up and was completed in March 2022. Tennant Creek IGA is now a modern, full range supermarket with an on site deli, butcher and bakery.

Delicatessen

Tennant Creek IGA is home to a full service deli. Including salads, meals, fresh seafood, marinated meats, antipasto, freshly sliced deli meats, pastries, catering and more!

Butcher

The on site Meat Department is a state of the art facility that is in operation to prepare fresh cuts of meat to the store.

The on site butcher can accommodate special orders, cuts and requests.

Bakery

Tennant Creek’s only bakery is located inside Tennant Creek IGA. They’re serving up freshly baked goods daily, including pastries, rolls, crusty breads, artisanal loaves and more!

On top of supplying the Barkly with freshly baked breads, the bakery stocks a large range of packaged cakes, breads, rolls, wraps, sweet treats.

Photo Display

As you step inside Tennant Creek IGA, you will immediately observe an array of historical photographs adorning the walls. These carefully selected images serve as a captivating window into the area's rich history, spanning from the inception of the camera.

Kindly be advised that, subsequent to extensive deliberations with local First Nations organizations, Elders, and key stakeholders, a collective decision was reached to abstain from incorporating images and likenesses of First Nations People. This decision has been taken with great consideration to prevent any potential distress among the Indigenous Peoples of the Barkly Region. The exhibit now proudly showcases a diverse array of artifacts, indigenous bushfoods, and traditional items, respecting and celebrating the rich cultural heritage of this region.

Mural

In 2023 five Tartukula artists- Penny Kelly, Heather Anderson, Michelle Brodie, Aileen Long and Lindy Brodie collaborated to create a mural for the Tennant Creek IGA. The artwork is a birds eye view of the town showcasing the local landmarks, shops and homes.

You can even spot the IGA!

Meet the Team

  • Angus Harrison

    Store Manager

  • Gaby Kilpin

    Assistant Store Manager

Began my journey in 1997 as a nightfiller at Coles while pursuing my Bachelor of Science degree at Uni, which I successfully completed. Amidst family commitments, including caring for my terminally ill sister and managing a mortgage, I found myself deeply engaged in the retail world. This experience ignited a passion that led me through various roles, from Nightfill Manager to Duty Manager, Department Manager, Grocery Manager, Store Support Manager, ultimately achieving the position of Store Manager in 2009. Over the years, I have successfully managed more than 10 stores, gaining extensive expertise.

My retail journey also involved hands-on experience in every fresh department, including occasional tasks such as meat cutting. Additionally, I spent two years working in the warehouse environment, providing me with valuable insights into the entire stock delivery process to customers.

While possessing a BSc and a Diploma in Management, I firmly believe that true knowledge comes from being on the floor, working collaboratively with the team, and striving for excellence in customer service.

One of my genuine passions is assisting, guiding, training, and supporting my team. Witnessing their personal and professional growth, and ultimately their success, brings me immense satisfaction. In essence, my commitment extends beyond qualifications; it is about fostering a thriving team environment and delivering exceptional service to our customers.
